For All The Grandparents Out There!

GRANDPARENTS' ANSWERING MACHINE

"Good morning.  We are not home at present, but please leave your message after the Beep".

Beeeeeeep!

"If you are one of our children, dial 1 and then select the option from 1 - 5 in order of "arrival" so that we know which one of you is calling"

"If you need us to stay with the children, press 2".

"If you want to borrow the car, press 3".

"If you want us to wash your clothes and do your ironing, press 4."

"If you want the grandchildren to sleep here tonight, press 5."

"If you want us to pick up the kids from school, press 6."

"If you want us to prepare a meal for Sunday, or have it delivered to your home, press 7."

"If you want to come and eat here, press 8."

"If you need money, press 9."

"If you are going to invite us to dinner, or take us to the theatre, start talking - we are listening!"

Today is International Women's Day, and I thought that was very much worth a mention on my Blog today.  Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world, ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events, through to local women's craft markets, theatrical performances, fashion parades and much more.

I would like to thank all those women, from the Suffragettes onwards, who fought so hard to gain women's rights and to make the world a much better place for the women of today, although, unfortunately, there are still parts of the world (Afghanistan and the Middle East for example) where there is still a long way to go for women to be treated with the respect they deserve.

Even though women have come a long way in terms of rights, careers, etc., there are still many places in the world where women are treated as property and have few (or no) rights. Although I am grateful for those who have come before me and blazed a trail, I often wonder if there's anything I can do to help other women.

I loved the Grandparents Answering Machine. So true!
I really appreciate all the feminists who opened up the world for women. I remember being a young woman and reading Feminine Mystique by Friedan and articles by Gloria Steinem.
I didn't know it was International Women's Day. I'll have to surf around the net and see what is going on.

On my Soapbox - I added a little bit to the final paragraph and, as soon as I posted this, I realized exactly what you pointed out, that there are still parts of the world where women are not treated as they should be.

Loved the grandparents answermachine! I am spending IWD in court as a witness.......oh joy of joys!

The first part was so funny. The IWD is such an important issue and I know so many of us feel helpless when it comes to problems women face in foreign lands with less respect than dogs but hopefully that will change some day in our lifetime. We just have to keep trying. A very good post today.

I absolutely LOVED the grandparents answering machine!!! And yes, I do like to think of womens day as a day to celebrate all the positives.. :)
Anyway, the negatives have to be battled for the rest of the year.. :\ I guess I can sum up my thoughts today in two pretty simple words...
We rock!! :D :D

What a hoot the answering machine message is! And thank you for reminding us about International Women's Day. Our appreciation should be boundless for all of the "uppity women" and supportive men who wouldn't (and won't) stop working for fairness and justice for all women. Annie

Belle - I knew all the grandmas would appreciate the answering message! Yes, we have a lot to be thankful to those women for.

Bethe - it's always nice to receive your lovely comments! Thank you.

Lyndylou - hope your stint as a witness won't be too horrible for you! Let's hope you will get it all over with today.

Odie - glad you enjoyed the first part of the post and you are right, of course, some women in different parts of the world are treated terribly. We can only hope that it will improve for them.

Becky - I'm here to let you know about these things! LOL!

Becca - lovely to receive your comment, as always.

PencilGirl - So glad you enjoyed the first part of the post. You're right, we must use this day to celebrate the positives and I totally agree with you - "we so rock!!"

I wish I had that answering machine message when I loved in CT and my son lived at home. That was awesome.

Happy IWD, Thisisme. I fully support the movement. You've come a long way, baby, but there's still a long way to go. As for the grandparents' answering machine, it should have included a key that could be pressed for "all of the above." (LOL) Have a joyous day, dear friend!

There is still some progress to be made but isn't it something to look back many years and see the progress we have made as women - it's pretty phenomenal. Unfortunately, we have a ways to go and I'm unsure that the entire world will be the way it should be but there is progress nonetheless. We are much more fortunate than many other women in less fortunate areas around the world but there are so many movements working on that as well - so it's exciting to see the womens rights around the world evolve.
The answering machine message was hysterical!

the answering machine was awesome!
one of my uncles sent an email a while back detailing the lives and sufferings of the women who fought for our right to vote in the US. it was truly an eye-opener. sadly, these same struggles are going on all over the middle east for women there.

AnnieJoy - The grandparent message was brilliant, wasn't it?! Yes, boundless thanks indeed to all those women that came before us and suffered so much so that we can enjoy the freedom we have today.

Chatty Crone - Happy Women's Day to you too!

Jumble Mash - thanks for your comment, as always. It's surprising how many people didn't actually know that it was International Women's Day today.

Bouncin'Barb - awesome indeed dear friend!

Shady - It's so good to know that you support the Women's Movement dear friend. Have a good week!

mskanorado - it is amazing indeed how far things have come for women. Being the age I am, I can remember how things were in the 60's and, believe me, it was a completely different world for women to what we have now!

Teresa - Those women who fought for the vote really do deserve our thanks. If things could change for women in the middle east, now that really would be a huge step forward!

Gawgus things - Wonderful, moi?!!
